2013 BET AWARDS: BEST & WORST DRESSED
Sunday’s 2013 BET Awards has everyone talking. Held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the annual award show had its highs and lows, but was entertaining overall. Chris Tucker’s impersonations and long-winded stories about his late friend, Michael Jackson, were expected but not all that appealing. On the upside, hip-hop rookie Kendrick Lamar and Drake both scored big, taking home 3 BET awards each, R.Kelly gave one heck of a performance of his greatest hits, and Nicki Minaj channeled her Trinidadian roots when dancing to the likes of Beanie Man, Chaka Demus & Pliers as well as Elephant Man in their reggae dancehall tribute. And of the show’s jam-packed roster of performances and guest appearances, Charlie Wilson, Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg getting down and funky on stage in honor of Wilson receiving the Lifetime Achievement award was one of the highlights of the night. And alike the show’s hit and miss points, the red carpet definitely had some good and bad moments as well, which is why we’ve given you our favorite–and not so favored–celeb looks!
Nicki Minaj slays the red carpet in this black lace gown by Roberto Cavalli. Among all of the other celebs, we think the YCMB queen reigned supreme as this year’s Best Dressed of the ladies.
And ranking in as Best Dressed of the men, our vote goes to Jamie Foxx, who looked dapper in Ozwald Boateng.
Showing off her curves, Adrienne Bailon looks radiant in her candy red grecian gown by Michael Costello. Her goddess-channeled look is made complete with an eye-catching pair of Roberto Cavalli stone embellished sandals.
Tatiana Ali looks beautiful in this abstract sequin gown by Lorena Sarbu. Though she kept it very simple with the accessories–only dawning a clutch and stud earrings–her flawless hair and makeup make her look all the more stunning.
2 Chainz throws it up two times in black and gold, wearing a Doberman-printed tee from Givenchy’s pre-fall 2013 collection and studded high-top sneaks from Versace.
White-on-white was a trend we loved seeing on the red carpet. Spunky singer Janelle Monae, who closed the award show with a funky performance featuring Erykah Badu, looked gorgeous in Dolce & Gabbana. Though her style aesthetic typically consists of a suit and tie, she makes it feminine with a jeweled neckpiece and Jimmy Choo sandals.
Michelle Williams’ dress by Nicci Hou was a true conversation starter. We love the peplum on her petite figure, but think that a more subtle look on the bottom would have made it perfect.
While we can do without the oversized bun atop Ashanti‘s head, she scored in wearing a white hand-beaded dress by Aiisha and nude Givenchy shark tooth sandals.
And what is there not to love about LeToya Luckett‘s summery white jumpsuit? Plus, that Saint Laurent clutch and matching ruby red lip makes her white ensemble pop.
Of all of the couples who dawned the red carpet, Future and Ciara–who had an unforgettably provocative performance during the latter part of the show–take our spot for the Best Dressed Couple. The stylish pair complimented one another so well, with Future wearing Givenchy and Ciara in a leather bra and matching pencil skirt with a pair of killer silver stiletto pumps.
Fact is, Miguel and model Nazanin Mandi are a picture-perfect couple, and while he looks cool in a sparrow-printed shirt from Dior Homme, she’s working that Anthony Vaccarello dress!
Glee actress Naya Rivera was our favorite sparkling starlet in Emilio Pucci alongside boyfriend, Big Sean, who kept it cool in Lanvin. Aren’t they a cute couple?
Our hats go off to Gabrielle Union in a cherry red number by Zac Posen and Dwayne Wade, sporting a shiny silver suit. The NBA superstar is not only a winner on the court with the 2013 World Champion Miami Heat, but also received this year’s Humanitarian Award due to his heartfelt work via his Wade’s World Foundation.
Although there’s no romance between Ne-yo and his artist Ravaughn, they looked great together!
Wiz Khalifa wore a rather plain black ensemble alongside his wife-to-be, Amber Rose, who looked adorable in a black and yellow dress by Versace.
Funny man Kevin Hart looked summer ready in a black-and-white checkered shirt, dark denim jeans and white sneakers. But his girlfriend Eniko Parrish jazzed things up a bit with a dazzling skirt from All Saints.
While we’re well aware of how hot it was over the weekend in Los Angeles, going shirtless is not typically considered a fashion statement other than on the beach. When it comes to the BET Awards–or really any public event–rapper Rick Ross is known for losing his shirt and proudly flaunting his rotund belly. It would seem that if you’re going to go the shirtless route, having abs like the ones that Miguel flexed during his performance at the show will buy you a pass. But yet again, there’s been another bare belly tragedy, this time with Trinidad James. “Mr. All Gold Everything” stayed true to himself, adorned in weighty gold chains, a gold medallion belt and chunky gold rings on every finger; however, his all-leather ensemble and gold-studded wingtip shoes were not smart style choices, to say the least.
Disappointed would be the word that comes to mind in having spotted Kat Graham’s vintage Versace look. Yes, we know she’s known for channeling rock ‘n roll when it comes to fashion, but this look just does not impress. Perhaps it’s the ankle boots that are making it awkward? We can’t quite put our finger on it.
Not exactly sure what French Montana was thinking with this one. While we’d like to think a pair of denim jeans would have been a better option than those knee pad-accented jogging pants, the vest is just all wrong too.
And we couldn’t help but laugh at J.Cole, Brandon T. Jackson and DJ Drama’s outfit choices as they all managed to wear the same exact Versace sweater. Though they may not go by the name “The Three Amigos,” they surely looked the part by looking ridiculously identical with the same style of black pants and shoes. Epic fail stylists!
Who do you think was the best and worst dressed at this year’s BET Awards?
